The very sad news item reported on http://losgigantes.com/news/?p=1084 regarding the escape of Tilly, the cat belonging to Sandy and Jimmy Quigley, in the cargo depot at Tenerife’s southern airport should be a lesson to everyone. Cat travelling boxes, with twist plastic locking devices for the gate are NOT secure. Believe it or not, many cats can push the door out of this type of box, particularly when they are in a panic and have a rush of adrenalin. It is worth spending the extra money buying a box which does not have the plastic twist fasteners for any part of the box.
As an association we regularly send our rescue animals to permanent, caring homes abroad. Cat boxes always have a spring loaded gate and cable ties or screws are used in conjunction with the fasteners used to join the top and bottom of the box.
Once the cat has been checked in cable ties are threaded through the air vents and the spring loaded gate and pulled tight.
One UK company, Ladyhaye, who handles the importation of dogs and cats, state quite clearly that they will only accept cats in boxes which have a spring loaded gate. Furthermore they insist that cable ties are used as an added precaution.
The Santiago del Teide branch of Asociación San Francisco de los Animales would like to thank Allison Barry for organising her second Sponsored Walk for the benefit of stray and abandoned animals within the municipality Santiago del Teide.
Twenty three walkers and six dogs participated in the walk which took place on Sunday, 15 March from Alcalá to Pilgrim’s Bar in Playa de la Arena. Stewart, the owner of Prilgrim’s kindly sponsored a buffet for the walkers. This was much appreciated by all.
One of the dogs on the walk was a Podenco Canario which had recently been picked up by a member. She was skin and bone and brought the plight of many dogs on the island to the attention of the public. Despite her thinness she managed the walk without problems.
The branch would like to thank all the people who participated in the walk and lastly but by no means least the sponsors. The event raised 1,110 euros. All monies will be used for the benefit of stray and abandoned animals within the Municipality of Santiago del Teide.

We were lucky to have international show judge, Brian Lister to judge our Fun Dog Show this year. He has not only judged at Crufts but also in America and Japan He said he was impressed with the standard of the event, held in the cultural centre car park behind the Hotel Los Gigantes on Sunday, January 25th.
“The venue was ideal,” he said, “and it was good to judge a show with such a great fun atmosphere. Everybody was there simply because they loved dogs and there was none of the fierce competitiveness and back-biting that goes on in some of the more serious shows I have judged.” Read the rest of this entry »

Our Christmas dinner dance was held on 12th Dec 08 at the Azafran restaurant at San Francisco. The restaurant is now under the new management of a Canarian family who laid on a superb meal of BBQ’d meats.
The night was fully booked and a very enjoyable evening was had by all dancing the night away to the lively songs of Jooles.

Annual Report
01.11.07 -31.10.08
The formation of our branch, in October 2007, was mainly due Heather Diss and Josy Williams. With the increasing number of call outs within the municipality, and limited or no funding from the main association for animals within this area, they suggested that we form our own autonomous branch of Asociación San Francisco de los Animales. The president and treasurer of the main association, Jill Jacobsen and Judy McIntosh respectively, were approached and it was agreed that we could go ahead. I had my doubts as to whether we would get sufficient support. How wrong I was!
I cannot believe that the branch has been operational for a year. And what a phenomenal first year we have had! Thanks to the hard work carried out by our few members and many willing helpers we find ourselves financially viable. We started our opening bank balance with a donation of 600€ from our friends in Luxembourg. Read the rest of this entry »

Over 50 people turned out to support us at our recent Fun Scrabble Night which was held at The Chicken Shack in Puerto Santiago.
John Broadhurst, the ringmaster for the evening, explained the rules for those who had not played for a while then it was all systems go for the 8 tables of 30 players in the first round. It was eyes down and deep concentration for the next 50 minutes, and the official scrabble dictionary was called for at regular intervals.
8 winners, which would now be 2 games of 4 people, were now through to the second round which commenced after a superb buffet supper. Deep concentration resumed again for the remaining 8 players, while the others formed groups to chat, eat more of that delicious buffet and to order more drinks.
The game was now down to two finalists as Maeve Hughes and Pat Cooper battled for the cup, while everyone else chatted more, bought their raffle tickets, ordered more drinks and tucked into the mouth watering deserts which were appearing on the tables.
The winner was Pat Cooper (pic left with John Broadhurst), a winter resident of Sunflower in El Varadero. Pat, from Blacko in Lancashire, is retired, has 5 grandchildren and is a regular scrabble player.
Runner up was Maeve Hughes from Puerto de la Cruz (Pic right with steve Gerald). Maeve has lived in Tenerife since 1978 and in her early days on the Island lived and worked in Los Gigantes. She was known on Steve Gerald’s radio show as “Maeve among the flowers” as she worked for a while at Roberto’s Florists.
Another winner of the evening was Eddie Cocozza(pic left with Steve Gerald), who claimed highest individual score for one word.
His score was 60 points. Eddie, from Glasgow, is a winter resident living in Calle Palmera, Los Gigantes.
A quick tot up of cash from ticket sales and the raffle totalled just short of a staggering €1500.
The organisers of the evening wish to thank all those who supported the event.
