Asociación San Francisco de los Animales, Tenerife
Asociacíon San Francisco de los Animales: Santiago del Teide Branch
Charity Number 4458 Fiscal Identity Number G 38540209 Associated with the RSPCA

Asociación San Francisco de los Animales was formed in February 1999 by a small group of animal loving people distressed by the plight of abandoned animals in the Asociación San Francisco de los Animales, TenerifeSouth of Tenerife. Due to the ever increasing number of abandoned animals and call outs in the west of Tenerife it was decided to start a Santiago del Teide Branch of the association. We held the inaugural meeting in October 2007.

Our main aims are to provide a neutering programme and veterinary attention, to educate the public in animal husbandry and, where possible, find permanent homes.

In order to keep the population down by the most humane method one of the main objectives of the association is to neuter as many of the stray and abandoned animals as possible. This particularly applies to cats on complexes where poison is frequently used to keep the number of cats down to an acceptable level. The cats are trapped, taken to a veterinary surgeon for neutering and released, after recovery, to their normal habitat. Tests are frequently carried out for FeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus) and FIVAsociación San Francisco de los Animales, Tenerife (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). If they are positive they are put to sleep by a vet to save further suffering and to stop the spread of the viruses. Stray and abandoned dogs are also neutered to prevent unwanted litters. Permanent caring homes are difficult to find! Unfortunately we do not have funding for a refuge kennel, most of the cats and dogs being fostered by members of the association until Asociación San Francisco de los Animales, Tenerifehomes can be found, whether it be in Tenerife, Holland, Germany, Luxembourg and occasionally the U.K.
Good working relationships have been established with similar animal associations in these countries. They are able to find permanent homes for some of our animals, particularly small dogs. The president of the Santiago del Teide Branch has a particularly good working relationship with Luxembourg, stemming back some 16 years.

All the animals travelling abroad have to be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies as well as receiving the normal vaccine. Dogs are also tested for Heartworm.
Contact is often made by the animals' new owners, informing us of their progress in their new homes and also enclosing photographs.

Permanent homes are exceedingly difficult to find in Tenerife.

We would be grateful of your support. Any donation and/or membership will enable us to continue funding this very worthwhile cause.
